Sunday Whatever6 Days From Tomorrow

…or at least it will be if I can get this done within the next 59 mins.
Been tricky to squeeze much listening in this week as, thanks to the largely unpronounceable volcano being not as apocalyptic as everyone thought, working at an airport hasn’t exactly given me much time to myself during the past 7 days. Still, I had a go anyway, and these are my picks of the week.

From Broken

Soulsavers – You Will Miss Me When I Burn

Nestling happily on Mojo’s covermounted CD this month among such other luminaries such as Gun Club, Nick Cave, Roky Erickson and James Brown, this sorrowful tale of Will Oldham’s is given an extra coating of desolate resignation courtesy of a beautifully chiming piano from the Soulsavers with Mark Lanegan’s vocal contribution.  Wonderfully sad.

From 'Brittle Times'

Red Ghost – Brittle Times

On a related note (at this point, I’d use this as some sort of evidence that I don’t just throw this together.  Sadly, this would be a lie, as I do), Australia’s Rosa Agostino – who sings backing vocals on the above, as well as take the lead on a couple of other tracks on Broken, to great effect – delivers this title track off her own solo EP with great confidence and heartbreaking frailty.  This is a tremendous record, and I can’t wait to hear more from this talent.

From 'Steve Caballero Bandology Vol.1'

Odd Man Out – Vast Difference

Skateboarding star takes time off to make a sort of skate-rock with vague Bad Brains overtones version of  Love-era The Cult record.  And it’s brilliant stuff.  Sadly, I lost my copy of their only album years ago, so all I have left of them is the few tracks on this anthology album featuring Caballero’s other bands (The Faction, Shovelhead and Soda).  Well worth tracking down.

From 'Amnesiac'

Radiohead – You and Whose Army?

It took me years to truly get into this album, and it’s now one of my favourites.  Driving back from Leeds at night on my own on the motorway, the huge piano riff that comes in about halfway through made the darkness of the moors that little bit blacker.

From 'Erland and the Carnival'

Erland & the Carnival – The Sweeter the Girl the Harder I Fall

From what is still my favourite album released this year, this is probably my favourite track.  Early Pink Floyd snuggles up to Van Morrison and the result is a mad waltz of a song that is becoming even more of a joy to listen to now that the sun is coming out for a bit and I have to wear one less coat.

11 minutes to spare! I’m getting the hang of this.
