Due to an unnaturally short attention span this weekend, I thought it might be an idea to just go through whatever I’ve been listening to this week and pick out five random tracks I’ve especially liked for no reason other than it might kill a bit of time before Match of the Day 2 starts:
Thomas Dolby – Radio Silence
Ah, the electro-pop wars of the early 1980s. At school, it was expected that you were either a fan of Howard Jones or Nik Kershaw. Me, being the contrary sod that I am, plumped for Thomas Dolby – an artist with a wonderfully mad CV and which ensured I got beaten up by both the Howard & Nik camps, even if I had a copy of Human’s Lib.
The album that this is from remains a huge favourite of mine, and while other similar artists from this time now sound a bit dated, this is still fresh and nerdy as ever, no doubt at least partially due to an infectious XTC-like air of English eccentricity.
Screaming Trees – Silver Tongue
Yup, the sun came out this week! Which meant that the jaunty Springy tracks started to make an appearance before the inevitable happens and it rains for the next six months. Criminally relegated to B-side status, the Trees rewrite Sympathy For the Devil as a bouncy rock track. And there’s nothing wrong with that sort of behaviour.
ZZ Top – La Grange
Following on from the above, this is another fantastic song to be driving around in the sunshine to. The drum fill near the start elevates it to absolute classic to these jaded ears. Very few songs say “a bloody good time” quite like this.
Tara Busch – Superfriends
For those who don’t know, Tara Bush is a delightful amalgamation of Kate Bush, Syd Barrett and Delia Derbyshire and her work is quirky loveliness. And even putting aside my fondness for mellotron flutey sounds, this song is hook-laden and mad in all the nicest posible ways. Can’t recommend this one highly enough!
Half Man Half Biscuit – Joy Division Oven Gloves
The Wirral’s finest, with their ode to post-punk kitchenware, became the rallying cry for those wishing to save 6Music radio. Sadly, it arrived in the charts a mere 50 places below it’s intended target of No.6, but at least it did better than Robbie Williams’ latest effort.
